Description
The Radius Master RM-48 uses a 50 x 1220mm (2″ x 48″) abrasive belt and gives you seven distinct grinding surfaces in a single machine — five contact wheels of varying diameters, a free-floating slack belt zone, and a flat platen — all accessible in seconds without tools. A quick-release tilting head and pivot mechanism let you swing the entire machine from vertical to horizontal orientation in moments, making every station accessible at the angle that suits your work.
The Series 2 design introduced measurable improvements over the original: sharp square corner notching is now achievable on both sides of the belt, belt tracking has been refined for heavy-duty ceramic-backed belts, and the head height has been increased for improved platen face work. Belt changes take as little as 6 seconds.
The single-speed RM-48 runs at a continuous belt speed of approximately 914 m/min (3,000 ft/min), driven by a robust 1.5 kW motor on 240V/10A Australian power — no phase conversion required. The machine is overload protected and totally enclosed for durability in commercial workshop environments.
Originally designed by John Price — a tool and die maker who spent 45 years refining belt grinding machinery — Radius Master was a winner of the ABC’s The New Inventors. In 2025, the brand was acquired by NIROC, Australia’s leading manufacturer of handcrafted metalwork tools, ensuring the machine continues to be manufactured and supported on Australian shores.
The RM-48 is used daily across industries including:
- Knife making & bladesmithing — hollow grinds, bevels, finger choils, edge refinement
- Engineering & fabrication — weld blending, de-burring, part shaping
- Aerospace — precision finishing of aluminium and titanium components
- Medical equipment manufacturing — instrument finishing and polishing
- Rural & agricultural manufacturing — farm equipment fabrication and repair
- Automotive & motorsport — chassis, roll cage, and exhaust fabrication
- Jewellery & goldsmithing — fine radius work and polishing
- Sculpture & art metalwork — form shaping and surface finishing
Company Information
Radius Master belt grinders are proudly designed and manufactured in Australia. The brand was founded by John Price, a qualified tool and die maker, who spent over four decades developing and refining the multi-station belt grinding concept. Radius Master machines became internationally recognised as the benchmark for precision belt grinding, earning a win on the ABC’s The New Inventors and building a loyal following across more than 40 countries.
In 2025, Radius Master was acquired by NIROC — an Australian business led by Corin Urquhart, a long-time knifemaker and metalworker with over 20 years of hands-on belt grinder experience. Under NIROC’s stewardship, the Radius Master range continues to be manufactured in Australia with the same uncompromising attention to engineering quality that made it famous.
