The 8″ / 203mm drive wheel sits at the base of the Radius Master belt head and serves a dual role: it is both the primary drive wheel that propels the abrasive belt and a large-diameter contact wheel that provides one of the machine’s seven grinding stations. Work supported against this wheel produces a subtle hollow grind profile ideal for blade bevels, large-radius inside curves, and fast stock removal on flat bar.
The “New Style” designation refers to the current-production design used on Series 2 machines — an updated geometry and rubber compound that improves belt grip, tracking stability, and durability over extended use. New Style vs. Old Style — Which Do I Need?
NIROC supplies two variants of the 203mm drive wheel to support the full Radius Master install base — New Style for current Series 2 production machines, and Old Style for earlier models. The external dimensions are similar but the bore, keyway, or hub geometry may differ between generations. Always confirm your machine’s production date or serial number with NIROC if you are unsure.
The Drive Wheel as a Grinding Surface
Beyond its drive function, the 8″ contact wheel is one of the most versatile grinding stations on the Radius Master. Its 203mm diameter produces a gentle hollow grind profile on flat stock — preferred by many knifemakers for primary bevel grinding on blade blanks, and by engineers for de-burring and radius blending on larger components.
