Radius Master 8″ Drive Wheel – New Style

Description

The 8″ / 203mm drive wheel sits at the base of the Radius Master belt head and serves a dual role: it is both the primary drive wheel that propels the abrasive belt and a large-diameter contact wheel that provides one of the machine’s seven grinding stations. Work supported against this wheel produces a subtle hollow grind profile ideal for blade bevels, large-radius inside curves, and fast stock removal on flat bar.

The “New Style” designation refers to the current-production design used on Series 2 machines — an updated geometry and rubber compound that improves belt grip, tracking stability, and durability over extended use. If your machine is a current Series 2 model (RM-48 or RM48AE-VS), this is the correct wheel. For older-style machines, see the Old Style Drive Wheel listing.

Over time, drive wheels can develop:

  • Surface glazing — hardened rubber that loses grip on the belt backing, causing slippage
  • Flat spots — from sitting under tension when the machine is stored for extended periods
  • Uneven wear — particularly on one side if belt tracking has been running consistently off-centre
  • Rubber cracking or separation — from age, solvent exposure, or heat buildup in heavy use

Any of these conditions reduces belt drive efficiency, affects surface finish quality, and can cause unpredictable belt tracking. Replacing a worn drive wheel is one of the most impactful maintenance steps you can take on a Radius Master machine.

This replacement wheel is manufactured by NIROC to the same specification as the factory-fitted wheel, ensuring the correct rubber durometer, diameter tolerance, and shaft bore for a drop-in fit on the Series 2 belt head. No machining or modification is required.

Signs your drive wheel needs replacing:

  • Belt slipping or surging under load
  • Difficulty maintaining consistent belt tracking
  • Vibration or wobble at belt speeds
  • Visible flat spots, surface cracking, or rubber separation
  • Uneven contact across the belt width when grinding

Company Information

This is a genuine spare part manufactured by NIROC, the Australian company that acquired Radius Master Machinery in 2025 and continues to build, supply, and fully support the Radius Master range from Australia. NIROC stocks a complete range of Radius Master spare parts — from drive wheels and tracking wheels to switches and platen assemblies — ensuring that Radius Master owners can keep their machines in service for the machine’s rated 20-year design life. Parts are available directly from NIROC (niroc.com.au) and through authorised Radius Master dealers.

Further Information

New Style vs. Old Style — Which Do I Need?

NIROC supplies two variants of the 203mm drive wheel to support the full Radius Master install base — New Style for current Series 2 production machines, and Old Style for earlier models. The external dimensions are similar but the bore, keyway, or hub geometry may differ between generations. Always confirm your machine’s production date or serial number with NIROC if you are unsure.

The Drive Wheel as a Grinding Surface

Beyond its drive function, the 8″ contact wheel is one of the most versatile grinding stations on the Radius Master. Its 203mm diameter produces a gentle hollow grind profile on flat stock — preferred by many knifemakers for primary bevel grinding on blade blanks, and by engineers for de-burring and radius blending on larger components. A fresh, true drive wheel also supports precise use of the Drive Wheel Tool Rest (RM-DWTR) and Hollow Grinding Jig (RM-HGJ) accessories.

Proactive Replacement

Even if your current drive wheel hasn’t failed, replacing it as part of a scheduled overhaul every few years is good practice on a heavily used machine. A fresh rubber surface improves belt grip, reduces motor load, and gives you more consistent tracking right out of the gate.
