Description

Product Overview

The Mitutoyo 543-700 Absolute Digimatic Indicator is a benchmark-grade digital dial indicator built for toolroom and production environments where reading errors and zeroing drift aren’t an option. Running on Mitutoyo’s ABSOLUTE encoder system — which retains its position reference even when powered off — this gauge is ready to measure the moment you switch it on, with no need to re-establish a datum. A 0.0005mm resolution display puts it firmly in the premium tier for runout checks, surface parallelism, and any setup work where a single thou of slop costs you a part.

  • ABSOLUTE Encoder Technology — Unlike conventional incremental encoders that lose their position reference when powered down, Mitutoyo’s ABSOLUTE system retains the datum continuously. In a busy shop where gauges get switched off between setups, this eliminates the risk of measuring from a false zero — a subtle but real source of scrapped work.
  • 0.0005mm (0.5 micron) Resolution — At half a micron per count, this indicator resolves detail that a standard 0.001mm gauge will miss entirely. That level of resolution is meaningful when you’re checking spindle runout on a precision lathe, verifying a ground surface for flatness, or setting a boring head to a tight bore tolerance.
  • Digital LCD Display — The large, flat-panel LCD eliminates parallax error entirely — a genuine limitation of analogue needle gauges when the viewing angle changes between readings. The display is also switchable between mm and inch, which keeps one gauge covering both drawing conventions on a mixed-spec job.
  • Stem / Shank Compatibility — The 543-700 uses a standard 8mm stem (lug-back style body), compatible with the vast majority of magnetic indicator stands, transfer clamps, and indicator holders in common Australian workshop use. No adaptor needed for most setups.
  • Ideal For — Tramming mill heads and vices, four-jaw chuck centring on a manual lathe, spindle runout inspection, surface grinder table parallelism checks, checking flatness of ground reference surfaces, and precision boring head adjustment.

Condition

Used (Good Condition / Honest Workshop Wear)

This gauge has seen shop use and it shows in the expected places — there is light surface wear and minor patina consistent with bench and stand handling, which is entirely normal for a working toolroom indicator of this calibre. The critical surfaces that matter — the spindle, the contact point, and the display lens — are in functional order. The gauge is reported by the seller as working and accurate, and the ABSOLUTE encoder means there’s no incremental drift to worry about from power cycling. The stem is undamaged and will seat properly in a standard indicator holder. There is no case or accessories included, which is the only practical gap worth noting. As with any used precision instrument, we recommend verifying zero and linearity against a known reference — a setting ring, a surface plate and gauge blocks, or a calibrated master — before putting it to production work. For toolroom, hobby shop, and general setup duties, this gauge will perform to its specification without reservation.

Brand Information

Mitutoyo Corporation, founded in Japan in 1934, is the world’s largest manufacturer of precision measuring instruments and is widely regarded as the global reference standard in metrology tooling — sitting above OEM and mid-market brands and directly alongside the top tier of Mahr, Tesa, and Starrett. Mitutoyo’s manufacturing is centred in Japan, with production held to tolerances that consistently meet or exceed their published specifications. In Australian toolrooms and calibration laboratories, Mitutoyo gauges are considered the default choice where accuracy and long-term reliability are non-negotiable.
