Description

Product Overview

The Mitutoyo 2416S is a classic imperial dial indicator built to toolroom standards — the kind of gauge that earns a permanent spot on the bench rather than getting shuffled to the back of the drawer. Graduated in 0.001″ (one thou) increments with a full 1″ measuring range, it covers the majority of everyday setups a machinist or toolmaker will encounter, from tramming a mill head to dialling in a four-jaw chuck or checking runout on a freshly turned shaft. Made in Japan, this is genuine Mitutoyo — not a rebadged import — and carries all the mechanical refinement that makes the brand the global reference standard in workshop metrology.

  • 0.001″ Graduation over a 1″ Range — One thou per division gives you enough resolution for the vast majority of machining and inspection tasks without over-complicating the read. The 1″ total travel means you’re not constantly repositioning the gauge on deeper setups, which matters when you’re indicating a long bore or checking taper across a workpiece.
  • Balanced Dual-Revolution Dial Face — The large outer dial reads 0–100 in each direction with a revolution counter sub-dial tracking full inches of travel. At a glance you always know where you are in the stroke — no mental arithmetic, no misreads under workshop lighting.
  • Mitutoyo Rack-and-Pinion Mechanism — The internal gear train is manufactured to Mitutoyo’s own tolerances, which means consistent, repeatable pointer movement without the backlash or stiction that plagues cheaper indicators. Repeatability is where cheap gauges fall apart on the bench; this one holds its position.
  • 8mm Stem (Standard Indicator Shank) — Fits the vast majority of dial indicator holders, mag bases, Noga arms, surface gauge posts, and toolpost indicator brackets without adapters. The lug-back mount is also present for direct clamping where needed.
  • Ideal For — Tramming mill heads and vices square, four-jaw chuck centring, lathe spindle and tailstock runout checks, surface plate inspection work, checking shaft straightness on a set of V-blocks, and setting up steady rests.

Condition

Used (Like New / Minimal Use, Excellent Mechanical Condition)

This gauge presents exceptionally well for a used tool. The dial face is clean and legible with no fogging, cracking, or scratching to the crystal — critical for accurate reading at arm’s length on the machine. The bezel rotates smoothly for zeroing with no sticking or slop in the detent. The spindle travels freely through its full stroke with no catching, roughness, or dead zones, and the pointer returns crisply to zero without prompting — both strong indicators that the rack, pinion, and hairspring are in sound condition. The stem and contact point show no visible damage. There is the expected light patina on the stem consistent with storage and normal handling, but no corrosion, pitting, or gouging to any functional surface. As with any used precision instrument, verification against a known reference before putting it into critical work is always good shop practice — dial it against a ground parallel or ring gauge on the surface plate to confirm the reading is tracking true before relying on it for tight-tolerance work.

Brand Information

Mitutoyo Corporation, founded in Japan in 1934, is the world’s largest dedicated manufacturer of precision measuring instruments and is the reference standard against which most other metrology brands are benchmarked. Their product line spans from micrometres and vernier callipers through to CMM machines and laser measurement systems, all manufactured under rigorous ISO-traceable quality systems. In the workshop context, Mitutoyo sits at the top tier of the market alongside Mahr and Starrett — a step above competent mid-range brands such as Insize or Moore & Wright, and well above the entry-level imported gauges common in the trade. Made in Japan is not a marketing claim here; it is a statement about the manufacturing tolerances, material quality, and calibration traceability behind every instrument that leaves their facility.
