FAQs For Buying Used Tools From Makers Market AU
Yes. Every used or new-old-stock tool is inspected and, where possible, tested for accuracy and function before listing. I deal in trusted brands such as Mitutoyo, Nikken, NSK, Noga and Nikken, so quality is already a given, but I still check each item.
If a tool has visible wear, it will always be photographed clearly and described honestly in the listing.
I’m a small, family-run operation, just me (Neill), my father in Sydney handling shipping, and my wife photographing and listing products.
We’re passionate about precision gear and believe honesty is what keeps this marketplace alive.
Every message, every order, every replacement, it’s personal to me.
If something’s wrong, you’re dealing directly with the person who listed the tool, not a faceless support desk.
Don’t stress, I’ll make it right.
If your tool isn’t performing as described, we’ll work with you to find the best solution:
– a like-for-like replacement (when available)
– a free upgrade to a better model
– or a full refund or store credit — your choice.
Because I source tools from Japan and Vietnam, a replacement might take a little longer if it’s not already in Australia. In those cases, I often include a small discount or credit toward your next purchase to say thanks for your patience.
Not always. Some listings, especially in machine tooling or lathe tooling, some items are marked “sold as is”. These tools might show normal signs of use such as rub marks, surface rust or engraving.
All visible wear will be clearly photographed and described so you can decide if it’s right for you before buying.
However, if a tool turns out to have unseen internal damage and can’t be used, I’ll help you replace or refund it. The goal is fairness, not fine print.
If the item hasn’t shipped yet, email us right away at [email protected].
Once shipped, returns are handled on a case-by-case basis. Used and “sold as is” items are generally not refundable for change of mind, but we’re always open to discussing it — being fair matters more than sticking to a script. Also please refer to the Return Policy

– Lathe tooling — holders, cutters, and boring bars
– Mill tooling — arbors, boring heads, and accessories
Our goal is simple: to make professional-grade tools accessible to Australian machinists and hobbyists — without the new-tool price tag.
Machine Tool FAQs
Choosing the right machine tools can make or break your workshop setup. Whether you’re running a home lathe, small mill, or just getting started with precision machining, it’s easy to get lost in the options. This section answers common questions about lathe tooling, milling accessories, and setup gear — from choosing cutting tools to understanding DRO systems and workholding basics. At Makers Market AU, we aim to make professional-grade tooling accessible, affordable, and easy to understand.
A typical lathe toolkit includes high-speed-steel (HSS) turning tools, carbide-insert toolholders, parting-off blades, boring bars, knurling tools, live/dead centres and a drill chuck for tail-stock operations. Together they cover most facing, turning, threading and drilling jobs in the home or pro workshop.
Start with a solid vice and an R8 or ISO30 collet set, then add end mills, slot drills, face mills, fly cutters and dovetail cutters. Round things out with an edge-finder and clamp set to handle accurate work-holding on your mill table.
Japanese brands—led by Mitutoyo—set the gold standard for micrometers, calipers and dial indicators. Other top names include Starrett (USA), Brown & Sharpe (USA) and TESA (Switzerland), all trusted for their repeatable accuracy and long service life.
Yes. While upfront costs are higher, Mitutoyo’s tight tolerances, hardened measuring faces and superb build quality deliver decades of reliable readings, minimise scrap and boost overall machining precision—often saving money long-term.
Well-maintained used lathes, mills or grinders can deliver industrial-grade rigidity at a fraction of new prices. Older iron is frequently heavier and more robust, and with proper inspection you can score top brands that hold tolerance and value for years.
Check backlash on the leadscrews, run-out on the spindle with a dial test indicator, listen for bearing noise, inspect ways for wear marks, and review service records. Bring a granite straight-edge and feeler gauges if possible.
HSS is inexpensive, easy to re-sharpen and excels on softer steels and aluminium. Carbide inserts stay sharp far longer, tolerate higher speeds and are ideal for tough alloys and production runs. Many workshops keep both to cover every material.
A DRO isn’t essential, but it slashes setup time and virtually eliminates cumulative error, especially on multi-step parts. Retro-fit kits start under $400 and add measurable accuracy and productivity to older machines.
For hobby use, annual calibration against gauge blocks usually suffices. In commercial settings or critical tolerance work (±0.01 mm), six-month or even quarterly checks keep micrometers, calipers and dial indicators within spec.
Makers Market regularly lists tool-starter packs—complete with cutters, collets and measurement gear—sourced from reputable suppliers and vetted used machinery. Subscribe to our newsletter for flash deals and giveaway promotions.
