The base surface shows some light scratches from shop use, but they’re so shallow you can barely catch them with a fingernail — nothing that would compromise seating on a reference surface or affect a reading. The body has been kept well oiled by the previous owner, which is exactly what you want to see on a used Japanese precision tool: no rust bloom, no pitting, just honest patina. Brand Information
Sokkisha Co. was founded in Tokyo in 1920 and grew to become one of Japan’s most respected names in precision measuring and surveying instruments — credited with developing Japan’s first automatic level. The company rebranded to Sokkia in the early 1990s and was acquired by Topcon in 2008, but vintage Sokkisha-stamped tools from the pre-1990s era are recognised by toolmakers and millwrights as cream-of-the-crop Japanese precision kit.
