Description
Product Overview
A vintage Moore & Wright square set in exceptional original condition — properly cared for by a working machinist and stored correctly over the years. This is the kind of set that rarely surfaces in this state: oiled, wax-dipped, and kept from the rust and abuse that claims most vintage toolroom squares. Whether you’re scribing layout lines, checking perpendicularity on a surface plate, or setting up a vice on the mill, a quality square set earns its place on the bench every single day.
- Hardened and ground reference faces — The working faces of a toolmaker’s square are only as useful as their flatness and perpendicularity. Moore & Wright ground their squares to recognised accuracy standards, meaning you get a reliable 90° reference rather than a nominal one. That matters when you’re checking a freshly ground shoulder or scribing a datum line for a critical fit.
- Multi-piece set format — A square set gives you matched blades and stocks across multiple sizes, covering everything from small work held in a vice to larger plate and casting layout. Having a consistent reference family means you’re not hunting for the right size mid-job.
- Vintage Sheffield-era construction — Pre-rationalisation Moore & Wright tooling was manufactured in Sheffield to toolroom tolerances. The steel quality and grinding practices of that era are well regarded by machinists who’ve compared them against modern economy alternatives — these are not decorative pieces.
- Original box included — The original fitted case keeps the set registered, protected, and organised. It also tells you a great deal about how the tool was stored — in this case, correctly.
- Ideal for — Surface plate layout work, scribing perpendicular datums, checking squareness of milled faces and shoulders, setting up angle plates, verifying sine bar and vee-block setups, and toolmaker’s inspection work.
Condition
(Used — Good Condition / Vintage, Machinist-Kept)
This set presents exceptionally well for its age. The previous owner — a working machinist — oiled and wax-dipped the pieces for long-term storage, which has done its job: there is no active rust, pitting, or corrosion on the working faces or blades. The ground reference surfaces retain their integrity. Some light patina and age-related marking is visible on non-critical surfaces, consistent with a tool that has seen genuine use before being correctly put away — this is normal and expected on vintage Sheffield tooling and does not affect function. The original fitted box is present and in good usable condition, showing wear consistent with age. As with any vintage precision square being brought back into active service, it is good practice to verify squareness against a known surface plate reference or a certified master square before trusting it for critical work — not because we have reason to doubt it, but because that’s simply correct metrology practice for any used square regardless of age or brand.
Included:
- 1 x Moore & Wright Square Set (vintage, multi-piece)
- 1 x Original fitted storage box / case
Not included: Surface plate, setting master, certificates of calibration.
Brand Information
Moore & Wright is one of the most recognised names in British precision metrology, with roots in Sheffield going back to 1906. At their peak, Moore & Wright tooling sat in the same tier as Rabone Chesterman and early Starrett for hand tools, and was specified by toolrooms, apprenticeship workshops, and government inspection departments across the Commonwealth — including Australia. While the brand has changed hands over the decades, vintage Moore & Wright pieces from the Sheffield manufacturing era carry a well-earned reputation for quality steel and consistent accuracy that holds up against modern equivalents.
